In this post, I want to share with you the proven and effective ways how to get more energy without using coffee or any other stimulants. Some of these approaches are really straightforward, while some require a bit more work and may be less intuitive at first. But trust me, experience shows that they work. And unlike with stimulants, energy gained this way involves no “crashing”, addiction and any other negative side effects. We are all about health on this blog! 🙂

Sleep is essential

First and foremost, you must get enough sleep. Although this is probably the most basic advice that anyone can give you regarding health and energy, people keep leaving sleep out of the equation.

No, it doesn’t matter how healthy you are and how much sports you do. If you don’t give your body enough sleep, you won’t be able to live a happy and energetic life. It’s as simple as that. Sleeping four hours won’t be enough. Even seven hours won’t do if you feel that you are not getting enough rest. Go sleep early enough and sleep as much as you need to.

When your sleeping patterns finally change, you will begin to feel like a whole different person, motivated to work hard and tackle your daily goals.

Choose your breakfast wisely

Some people make very poor breakfast choices, and some prefer not to eat breakfast at all. Both are wrong. To get energy, you must put fuel into your body. Food is your fuel.

It’s not enough to just eat something for breakfast. The wrong type of breakfast not only won’t help you, but will make you feel worse.

Ideally, your breakfast should include some proteins and carbs. Fats can be eaten later throughout the day. But don’t stuff yourself with chocolate or sweet buns. Instead, eat some oatmeal, oat bran, muesli and the like.

You may be wondering how exactly are chocolate and sweet buns worse than oatmeal? Well, it’s true that they all contain carbs, which is what we need for energy. Despite that, these foods have a different “glycemic index”. Chocolate and sweet buns, for example, have a high glycemic index. Most porridges, on the other hand, have a low glycemic index. The lower the glycemic index the better.

Foods with a high glycemic index make your blood glucose levels very high, which causes a rapid release of insulin, which then makes your blood glucose levels drop very low. This makes you physically and mentally exhausted, prevents you from burning fat, and will make you hungry once again sooner than you thought.

Foods with a low glycemic index raise blood glucose levels slowly, which allows you to feel full for much longer. Fat is also burnt more easily, and you are mentally and physically more active.

Finally, chocolate and sweet buns both have a lot of pure sugar and saturated fats, both of which are unhealthy and we should try to avoid.

Motivation

Motivation is another very important piece of the puzzle when it comes to how to get more energy.

If you have tasks to accomplish during the day, but you don’t feel motivated, then you will probably feel like your energy is very low. But if you do feel motivated, then you will work hard regardless of the external circumstances.

To become more motivated, spend some time watching and reading motivational content. Remind yourself how grateful you feel to be a part of this world, and how excited you are about the coming day. With a positive attitude towards the world, you are tuning yourself for a maximum amount motivation, and therefore energy and success.

Exercise

I have noticed that the more exercise I do, the more energetic I feel throughout the day and the more I feel like LIVING. This is partly because sports and exercise help us get rid of toxins in the body and reduce the amount of stress, but partly also because exercise is addictive. The healthier you get and the better you begin to look, the more you want to continue with it.

People who don’t exercise usually tend to feel more lazy. I am convinced that exercise is essential when it comes to how to get more energy.

Vitamins

While not deadly, a vitamin deficiency can lead to an overall poorer quality of life, which is why it is important to make sure that you are getting the required daily amounts.

Recently, I had some blood tests taken. As it turned out to be, due to me being a vegetarian and living in part of the world with very little sunlight, I was very low on Vitamin D. As a result, I immediately purchased a vitamin supplement to make sure I increase the level of that vitamin in my body.

If you haven’t yet done so, I strongly recommend you go and get your blood work done. Only through blood tests, you can really know whether you are lacking some vitamins in your body. This is especially important to do if you also have a vegan, vegetarian, or any other strict type of diet.

A small amount of vitamins in your body can make you feel bad and low on energy.

Stress reduction

You know what can really easily kill energy? That’s right, STRESS!

When we talk about how to get more energy, it’s important to also keep dealing with stress. If your stress levels are high, your energy doesn’t really matter that much; you won’t be able to use it properly.

I meditate to deal with stress and I also work out. Some people may read books, some play instruments, some glue together toy car models, etc. Whatever works for you, do it. And make sure you do it consistently, on a daily basis.

Keep it fresh

Open your windows, go for walks in the nature, breathe.

You have probably noticed that sometimes you can sit in a closed room for long, feeling tired and sleepy, until a window is opened. Well, oxygen is what our brain needs to keep working hard and effectively.

So whenever you begin to feel tired from doing all the work, make sure you have a source of fresh air.

Remove the unhealthy

The last but not least tip on how to get more energy is not about doing something healthy, but rather about NOT doing something unhealthy.

Some of the things you should consider removing from your life are tobacco, caffeine, alcohol, other drugs and stimulants. But even if you can’t remove them altogether, decreasing their amount in your life will do miracles for you. Trust me.
