Losing weight, growing a business or finding the energy to get up early each morning, can all be very difficult changes to accomplish. Lack of motivation, procrastination and adversity are the things that we are inevitably challenged by when pursuing those changes.
When obstacles become too big for us to handle, and there is no one to support us, we eventually give up and thus fail. This is the hard reality of life. Fortunately, though, there is a way around. This is where masterminds come into place.
Because I’ve benefitted from masterminds so much myself, I wanted to share everything I know about the subject with you as well. I will explain what the concept is about, as well as how to start a mastermind group and even lead one, if you want to help others and earn for a living that way.
Also, if you’ve come here to find out more about The Knowledge Broker Blueprint (KBB) free online training hosted by Tony Robbins, Dean Graziosi and Russell Brunson, and want to attend it, you will find more information on that in the last section of the blog post. Enjoy!
What is a mastermind?
The concept of Mastermind Groups was first introduced by Napoleon Hill in his book called “Think and Grow Rich“. He explained that “The coordination of knowledge and effort between two or more people who work towards a definite purpose in a spirit of harmony… No two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible intangible force, which may be likened to a third mind”.
Basically, a mastermind is a place for like-minded people to gather and to discuss ideas. It’s also a place that helps people accomplish their goals in the most efficient way possible. Mastermind group members also support each other by offering help and advice, and hold each other accountable to make sure that no one is lagging behind in that process of becoming more successful.
Since the book has been published in 1937, the concept of masterminds has become extremely common. Seeing how effective a mastermind can be for the personal growth of an individual, it is no wonder that most of the successful people on this planet have been a part of a mastermind at least at some point during their lifetime.
As soon as I found out about this concept, I, too, joined a group. Later on, having received so much value from it, I began to wonder how to start a mastermind group myself.
4 main benefits of a mastermind
Accountability
The first out of the four main benefits of a mastermind group is accountability.
Mastermind groups are extremely effective because of the mutual respect that all members have for each other. Having respect means creating goals and then working hard to make them happen. Whatever you say you will do by the time of the next meeting, needs to be done. All other members are there to witness this.
When you are alone, it’s easy to procrastinate and go off track with your goals. There are always a million different reasons why we put off the tasks that we promised ourselves to do. But not in a mastermind group. Mastermind group members are there to motivate each other and to make sure that no member is left behind. The mutual respect is why mastermind groups work.
Support
Of course, not all tasks can always be completed on time. Life is unpredictable. If this happens to any of the members, all of the other members are there to support you. They listen to you, try to understand the challenges that you may be facing, and are there to help you where needed.
Having support means not being on your own. It means having other people share opinions and pieces of advice with each other. Not only you get the support, but you also give support to other members. The benefit of supporting others is that you actually learn very much about yourself in the process of doing so.
People that join mastermind groups are usually already highly motivated and ready to take action. These are the people that are also always open to helping those that struggle more. In other words, the atmosphere in mastermind groups, whether in person or online, is very warm and friendly.
New contacts
One thing worth mentioning about mastermind groups that is not always apparent is that you get to make some amazing connections and even build long-term friendships.
As already mentioned, mastermind groups are filled with highly motivated and ambitious individuals that can have very similar interests to yours. This means that you get to hang out with like-minded people that in the future can continue working with you.
One of the reasons that I joined a mastermind group was to find people to whom I could talk about my business struggles. These people simply did not exist around me in my family or amongst my friends. The group gave me the opportunity to connect with those people. And even though the group is not active at the moment, I still regularly talk to some of the old members, which is awesome.
Exponential growth
The last of the four main benefits of a mastermind group, and arguably the most important, is the growth itself.
Masterminds have very many benefits, but the growth that you experience from being in one is just beyond words. The strategies that you learn from other members, the experiences that everyone shares with each other, the mistakes that they have made and were able to overcome – all of that adds up and helps you boost your own progress exponentially. You learn from others and therefore avoid making their mistakes.
Similarly, when you realize that you’ve hit a wall and don’t know how to proceed with your business/diet/motivation/career, you have other members there to support you and to help you overcome that problem. This is priceless, really.
The bottom line is that regardless of how motivated, ambitious and hardworking you are, you will never be able to grow on your own as fast as you will in a mastermind group. Mastermind groups take your growth onto a whole new level.
How to start a mastermind group?
Before creating my first mastermind, I read a few different articles and watched a couple of videos on how to start a mastermind group. I thought that I grasped the concept and my knowledge of it would be sufficient. I was wrong.
To begin with, I went to some facebook groups and online forums, and asked for people to join my new free mastermind group. Many of them agreed.
As soon as we got together to have our first mastermind session, I quickly realized that I was pretty much the only one talking. I explained what we were going to do, how we were going to do it, and asked what the expectations of other members were. I didn’t feel like it was a bad first mastermind meeting, but it didn’t feel like it was a good one either.
Previously, when I would be a part of someone else’s mastermind group, I would feel quite relaxed and had always received a ton of value. Now that I decided to up my game and lead one myself, in the hope of making it another source of income in the future, I began to doubt this plan. It was a lot of work, while the output was minimal.
Very quickly the group began to fall apart. People started skipping meetings without even telling me about it in advance. They did not do their “homework” and had no real excuses other than “I didn’t have enough time”. Because of this, we couldn’t really make any progress and were, therefore, running out of topics to talk about. It was awkward, to say the least. I, of course, also lost my motivation to prepare for these meetings, and so I didn’t.
After the group had naturally dissolved, I said to myself that I am no longer going to do this for free. It became very clear that people don’t take free groups seriously. They don’t value your time as the one leading the group and they don’t feel the need to actively participate. I understood that people must give away something to truly value what they get in return.
