If you are interested in blogging as a source of passive income, there are two things that you must start with: picking a niche and a platform to blog on. I have already discussed how to pick the right niche here. However, if you’ve come here to find out what is the best blogging platform and why, then you’ve come to the right place, my friend. I will tell you all about it below.
But I must warn you that in this post, I will not be comparing different blogging platforms. In my opinion, doing so would be pointless, and I will explain to you soon why. Besides, I want to save you time and spare you from the mental agony that you would experience when trying to pick the right platform. There are a lot of them!
So what is the best blogging platform?
Before starting this blog, I was fortunate enough to work as a WordPress developer for some time. The meant that I got to know the CMS (Content Management System) and was well aware of what it was capable of. Honestly, I was amazed by WordPress right from the start.

The thing is, many soon-to-be bloggers typically think that they have only two choices when it comes to what platform to use. The first option is that they create a fully custom website, which means hiring a developer and spending a lot of time learning how to operate that website on the internet. The second option is them using an already existing blogger platform.
Obviously, most people that are not tech-savvy will not want to go for the first option. Who wants to spend money and learn all of this complicated nerdy stuff when you don’t have to? Right, no one! In fact, that’s what you still see today – thousands of blogs hosted for free on oldish-looking blogger platforms.
But please, don’t fall for the simplicity of using an existing platform specifically for bloggers. Things have changed dramatically in the past ten years on the internet. You no longer have to hire developers to code your blog and no need to spend money on things that you are not even sure you understand the purpose of. This is where WordPress comes in.
WordPress.org VS WordPress.com
But before you run off WordPress blogging, you need to know that WordPress.com and WordPress.org are not the same thing. WordPress.com is just another blogging platform, which acts more like your blog hosting company and has many limitations depending on what plan you pay for. WordPress.org is your friend.
So when you hear people talking about what is the best blogging platform to make money, and naming WordPress, you can be sure that they are talking about wordpress.org.
Why WordPress over everything else?
You may be wondering, how exactly is WordPress the best blogging platform? Well, there are a few advantages that make it far ahead of everything else.
Easy setup
WordPress is actually super easy to set up. You don’t even have to go to their official website to do anything. Many hosting companies, such as Bluehost (I personally use them), offer really cheap payment plans and a so-called “1-Click WordPress Install”. Yes, it’s possible to set up your WordPress blog with 1 click. So when they say a “1-Click WordPress Install”, it’s no joke.
Infinite amount of plugins and themes
According to WebsiteSetup, 60% of all Content Management Systems on the internet are WordPress. In addition, according to Digital.com, 26% of all internet’s websites are powered by WordPress.
So as you can see, the numbers are quite impressive. This confirms the fact that WordPress is extremely popular, and therefore efficient.
Because of how many people use WordPress for their websites/blogs, tens of thousands of plugins and themes have been made. Many of them are free. In fact, the theme that you are looking at right now was initially free. I have, however, improved it over time. Also, out of the ten or so plugins that I use, I only pay for one of them.
What makes WordPress so powerful is that you can do so much with it without paying a cent. As mentioned, most plugins are free, can do miracles with your blog, and you also won’t have to know a single thing about coding to get them running.
Real domain name
When you use another website to blog on, you typically cannot choose the domain name at all. For example, I sometimes use Medium to share my blog posts. The link to my profile looks like this: https://medium.com/@victorstep999.
On the other hand, you have probably seen blog domain names that look like this: https://blablabla.wordpress.com. When you see that “wordpress” word in there, it means the person went for a free plan with the WordPress.com platform. It may seem like going with a free plan is a good option, but that is not something I would ever recommend you do.
First of all, hosting plans are quite cheap to begin with, so investing in that shouldn’t really be too much of a problem.
Secondly, by using a domain name, such as https://blablabla.wordpress.com, you lose credibility on the internet. Most people will never consider these types of domain names serious, which means that it will be very hard to attract an audience.
Finally, the biggest reason why you want to have your own unique domain name without that extra “wordpress” word in there, is because of SEO.
As you continue growing your blog, your domain name is going to gain authority on the internet. This means that your blog will start to rank higher in the Google search engine results, and therefore more people will be able to find it. This is what eventually leads to passive income.
However, if you see that your https://blablabla.wordpress.com is gaining traction and you want to change your name to something a bit more professional, all of that “SEO love” that you have accumulated over the years, will be lost. There are, of course, ways to pass it on to the new domain name, but trust me, it’s a hassle you want to avoid. So you need to consider having your own unique domain name right from the start. Don’t go for what seems easier. Go for what is right.
Bluehost, by the way, offers a free domain name registration when you set your up WordPress blog. So you don’t even have to buy one elsewhere – you can do it directly with them.
Easy to find help
Because of how popular WordPress is, the internet is packed with helpful information about it. You will probably never come across a problem concerning your blog that no one else has experienced.
Also, as your blog grows, you may want to personalize it and make some very unique tweaks to it. To do this, you will ask a developer to make those changes. Because you use WordPress, finding a developer for a decent price will be very easy to do.
If you use an existing platform to blog on, you probably won’t have any of the problems a person that is hosting their own blog may have, but you also won’t have any of the freedom to customize as you please.
Conclusion
Creating a blog using the WordPress platform may be the less easy path to take, but it’s also the smartest.
As a blogger, you want to create your own content to attract an audience and eventually to make passive income. You want the best hobby in the world to become your main source of income.

Blogging, therefore, is more than just writing. It’s also about creating a brand, and the only way to do that is to have your own uniquely looking blog with a unique (domain) name. Just think about your favorite bloggers.. do they use platforms that allow them only partial control over their blogs? I highly doubt that.
Click To TweetTo be a blogger means to have the best hobby in the world as a source of passive income.
At the end of the day, WordPress is the best blogging platform because it offers the most control while remaining an easy platform to use, even for people that are quite far from technology. By using WordPress, you are making sure that you are serious about blogging and that there is a future for you as a blogger.
