Blogging Is Dead in 2024? – To Blog or Not to Blog

Is blogging dead? What about this niche, is it saturated? Can you still make money through writing on the Internet? And is the effort worth it? Maybe I should look into some other online business or…? What about Open AIs that can write waaay quicker than I can?

God, if only I would get a dollar for each time I hear these questions asked.

Today, I will try to answer these questions by writing a single post that sums up all of the above. By the end of this read, you will know whether blogging is dead in 2024 or not. Of course, take it always with a grain of salt, since it’s only MY opinion, even though honest one. At the same time, keep in mind that I have been blogging since 2016 and I am still around, so I do feel that my opinion can in fact be of value to you.

The number of blogs is only growing.

A good place to start when thinking of whether blogging is dead in 2024 or not is with the total number of existing blogs today.

According to Koala Rank and GrowthBadger, currently, out of 1.7 billion websites, there exist 600 million blogs in the world. You will say that’s a lot, but what is the trend concerning the growth yearly? Well, on average, in the USA from 2014 up until 2020, the number of newly created blogs has been ranging from half a million to a million every single year. Impressive, right?

Now you may be thinking, “well that’s a lot of new blogs… how am I supposed to get noticed???” And I am glad you asked this question… because you should. You are thinking in the right direction. Let’s try to approach this question philosophically.

First of all, the number of new blogs emerging every year over the last six years has remained roughly the same. That, in a relatively dry form, already indicates that blogging is not dying at all, at least from the perspective of bloggers themselves. But what about the number of people reading those blogs? Is it growing? Again, let’s approach this from an objective angle.

1. World’s population keeps growing every year. This means more readers.

2. Internet is becoming more accessible to places in the world where it didn’t exist in the past. Again, more new readers.

3. Search engines, such as Google, change all the time. It’s never the case that one blog post would remain at the top of the search engine results forever. For example, I’ve had plenty of blog posts that ranked as number one for a specific keyword in Google that later on got pushed down because a new, better blog post emerged.

In other words, even if there will be a gazillion blogs in the world, you have a chance to get noticed as long as you create better content than others.

I hope this makes sense. If it doesn’t, you can always leave me a question in the comment section below.

Besides, I have been blogging since 2016, and have had plenty of people start their blogs with me at the same time. This is not any exact statistics, of course, but I can say that pretty much out of 100 new blogs, only one to three blogs actually become something significant.

Why so few? Simple. Because people are not ready to do the work!

Blogging Is Dead in 2021

Most bloggers just want to make easy money and when the money doesn’t come, they don’t bother to continue writing.

You need consistency, which most people lack.

So the good news is that while competition and the big numbers that I mentioned above may seem scary and discouraging, you have nothing to worry about if you are going to be serious about becoming a full-time blogger. Just do your thing and don’t mind anyone else. This way you will have success without a doubt.

Why do you blog?

Another wise thing to think about is your “why?” concerning blogging. What is the reason why you want to get into blogging? As I mentioned earlier, if you are in it just for the money, forget about it. No, seriously, it’s going to be a waste of time.

Not that blogging can’t make you any money (trust me, it can, which is also another reason I keep doing it), but that takes time. To grow your blog, you need to be consistent and patient. Only once you start seeing traction with your blog, then you can start monetizing it. And that is when you will be able to answer the question for yourself, whether blogging is dead in 2024 or not.

Because most people start blogs for the money and never make it far, they are the ones to spread the rumors that blogging is dead. I mean, they don’t have any experience in making money through the content they create, so what else can they say?

Money can certainly be an achievement point for you, but don’t make it your primary goal! For example, I started my blog because I wanted to help people. I was able to help myself, so I wanted to share my experience with other people as well. That is how the idea of starting a blog emerged. I didn’t even think of money for the first year of blogging.

In other words, create a solid “why” you want to start a blog. This way, whenever you feel discouraged or haven’t started making any money yet, your “why” will remind you of the true purpose why you started blogging in the first place.

Other things to think about…

Today, it’s often the case that blogs are no longer created on their own just for the purpose of blogging. Instead, blogs are used as a gateway to help the visitor reach a certain destination.

is blogging dead

You may be an IT company trying to show off your projects, a life coach looking for new clients, a digital entrepreneur selling merch or simply an author trying to promote your book.

For example, it’s no secret that Google and other search engines look for keywords and informative pieces of text to include in their search engine results. This means that you no longer will be able to attract new clients through the Internet if you have a company with a very primitive website. By primitive, I mean those single-paged websites that display only a few paragraphs of text. Unless a person already knows your website, they most likely won’t find it by doing a random Google search.

Therefore, many successful companies, online stores and even brick-and-mortar shops have started to add a “blog” section to their websites. In other words, articles that you publish on your business’s homepage will help your business to get noticed as well. That’s just how SEO works these days.

Even Facebook, to my surprise, has a blog/news section of its own.

Big blogs aren’t quitting either.

If you’ve been interested in blogging, you probably know a couple of major blogs yourself, blogs that have been around for ten or twenty years. Do you think if blogging is in fact dead in 2024, would old blogs still be around? The ones that I follow only keep growing as time goes by.

Sure, you might say that the only reason why they still exist today is because they are already on the top and it’s easier for them. While I will agree with you on that, that is definitely not the only reason they are around today.

Many of these blogs would make their income in the past solely from selling ads. However, ads today won’t earn you as much as they would five years ago. This is just how it is.

Instead, what these blogs have done is diversified their streams of income. Many started selling online courses, some do affiliate marketing, some do coaching, some sell books, etc.

It’s true that the trends in the digital world are shifting, but so should you as a blogger. Many of the things that worked in blogging ten years ago won’t work today. That’s ok, that is how it is with most types of business. You need to be aware of this and be up to date with what does work.

Therefore, I do not say that blogging is dead in 2024. I say that it is different and needs to be approached using the best practices for that very moment.

The niche.

Another thing that I would like you to keep in mind is that despite blogging being saturated today, it does not necessarily concern all niches.

keyword research

For example, if you take niches such as weight loss, making money online or self-development (the niche I began with), you’ll see that these niches are insanely saturated. They have been around since the very beginning of blogging and therefore are made up of thousands of blogs. So when picking a niche for your blog, you might think twice before going into those very broad types of niches.

“What options then do I have?”

Option 1: narrow down your niche.

By narrowing your niche, I mean pick a niche that is not so general. For example, if you still want to go into the self-development niche, pick rather something more specific, such as NLP practice, emotional well-being, a certain type of meditation or workout, etc.

By having a more specific type of niche, you cut off millions of competitors and therefore have higher chances of early success. However, this is a complicated topic of its own that I have covered before. I suggest you read my post about it here.

Option 2: pick a modern niche.

By picking a modern niche, I mean finding a niche that hasn’t been around for long. In a way, you will be one of the blogging pioneers for that niche and can have plenty of success fast. On the other hand, that niche may never blow up as much as you hoped and you will have a hard time growing. This is a common risk in business.

An example of a rather new niche that I could think of is a blog that is in the herbal medicine niche, specifically CBD oil. This thing has not been around for too long, but it seems like people are having plenty of success selling it and creating their blogs around it.

But then again, CBD oil is legal only in certain countries. Legality is another good point to keep in mind when picking your niche.

AI

Most of us by now have heard about the concept of Artificial Intelligence and how good it has become in creating well-written texts in a matter of minutes. And while that is true, there is something to keep in mind.

AI creates texts based on something that already exists on the internet. So if what you write comes either from personal experience or is something that happened recently, like world news for example, then AI won’t be able to help you.

And second, I don’t see AI taking over human-written texts in the near future. It is not capable of having its own unique writing style as you have, for which your readers come to your blog instead of just reading things off Google. So in my mind, AI is the same thing as hiring someone else to write your blogs for you. Unless you are ok with that, I would let the whole idea of AI taking over blog writing go, at least for the near future.

That being said, AI is a great place to start when you are brainstorming. Once you have become used to writing blog posts, you know what your readers like and you get the basics of SEO, then by sure means do use AI when you feel like you need a place to start from.

Always keep in mind the future of your blog…

Finally, the last but not least point. In a way, it is similar to the point in which I talk about the “why” of your blog. But I would like to expand on it a bit.

Think of the future of your blog. Let’s say that your “why” was meaningful enough for you and that your blog made it big. Your blog became insanely successful. How do you see this?

Do you feel fulfillment because you are constantly helping others? Have you started another business that you dreamt of because you finally have the money and the confidence you gained from having your own blog? Have you started a charity that you can now afford? Do you see yourself living in any part of the world, in a big house and spending all of the time you want with your family because you are now your own boss?

Well, whatever it is, keep thinking about it.

I wrote earlier that money should not be your why. However, always know that your why, sooner or later, will open new doors for you that you didn’t initially even dream of. Of course, this is only if you don’t give up on your blog. DO NOT GIVE UP!

Even if you trip, get right back up and keep moving forward.

Final recommendations.

Never stop learning. Keep studying blogging and the niche that you will be creating your blog around. This way not only you will never get tired of writing, but you will also know what to write, how to write and when to write.
