DESTEK V4 VR Headset Review: Benefits of Virtual Reality Headsets

Not so long time ago I was at my brother’s place and got to play around with a virtual reality headset. Needless to say, it was pretty fun. Of course, I have known about VR headsets for a long time, but this was actually the first time that I had a full hands-on experience.

As soon as I returned back home, I immediately began to browse for VR headsets on Amazon. I had no idea that there are that many on the market. I knew only of a couple, but both Amazon and eBay have hundreds of options to pick from.

Because currently I own an iPhone, I was looking for a headset that works with iOS and is not too expensive, but also isn’t rubbish. Having browsed many products and read all of the reviews, my choice fell on the DESTEK V4 VR headset.

Opening up the package of the DESTEK V4 VR headset, I was pleasantly surprised. The box was well designed and had everything neatly packed.

In the box I found the headset itself, a portable bag for it, a user manual, a cleaning cloth and some extra pads to make sure the phone is held in place tightly.

To be honest, when unboxing the package, the first feeling that I got was that these guys care. For such a small price, I expected a lot less.

With the order, DESTEK added a little wooden mobile phone holder as a bonus, which left a very pleasant feeling. And in the manual, which is by the way in English and Chinese, they remind the reader to use their supplied cloth to clean the lenses in the headset. I thought it was very thoughtful of them.

I have held a few different VR goggles, and the DESTEK V4 VR headset feels no different than some of the other more expensive siblings.

The DESTEK V4 VR headset is tightly fixed on your head from three sides with adjustable head straps. It also has a soft face padding, which really is soft. I’ve used the headset for a long time and experienced no discomfort whatsoever.

It’s made out of plastic, just like all of the other headsets. This is done so that you wouldn’t have to carry anything heavy on your head. But the plastic feels quite sturdy, not like it’s going to instantly break. Having paid at that moment only $25,99 for the product, I thought that the quality of the plastic would be much worse.

Inside of the DESTEK V4 VR headset, you will find two HD lenses. The lenses have an anti-blue light coating, which reflects blue light to protect your eyes.

On the bottom of the headset, you will find two switches, which are used to adjust the distance of lenses between each other. On the top of the headset, you will find a little wheel, which you can use to increase and decrease the distance of lenses from your eyes for better focus.

Finally, on top of the headset, you will also find a conductive touch button that can be used to control the things you see while you have the headset on. It basically acts as a select/play/stop button.

Since I decided to get a DESTEK V4 VR headset without a controller, having the button on the headset is very handy. The button allows you to do some basic actions without having to take the headset off every time you need to change to the next YouTube video, for example.

NOTE: You can get the same DESTEK V4 VR headset with a controller and have much more functionality. The reason why I didn’t get a controller is because it doesn’t work too well with Apple devices, as it does with Android devices. This isn’t the headset’s fault, but instead has to do with the way the iOS system is built. Nevertheless, if you have an Android device, then I would recommend getting the controller, since it’s very handy for playing games.

Also, keep in mind that when it comes to VR, bigger mobile phones with bigger display resolutions do better than small phones with lower display resolutions. For example, VR works better with iPhone 8 Plus rather than iPhone 8, although iPhone 8 can also be used.

What is virtual reality good for?

Although it may seem like playing games within virtual reality is fun, which is true without doubt, it is definitely not the only use for this technology.

My favorite way to apply virtual reality headsets is for treating phobias. For example, if you have a serious fear of heights, you can install a game or a video in which you walk on roofs. Or if you are afraid of spiders, play a game that is filled with spiders.

It may seem like VR is different from the normal reality, but trust me, VR can get very real and very scary. I tried it myself with one of the phobias and had as much fear as I would in real life, including a fast heartbeat and an adrenaline rush.

Virtual reality glasses can also help people learn and be trained, treat various traumas and anxiety, work with different disorders such as autism, and even allow paraplegics to regain body functions by stimulating those parts of the brain that are normally not used.

Basically, virtual reality is there to be our playground and to simulate those situations for us that we need most. Learning to do things well in that reality will help us better cope with the real world too.

Other popular virtual Reality headsets

Samsung Gear VR

Samsung Gear VR was actually the first VR headset that I ever got to play around with. It’s not as cheap as DESTEK V4 VR, but it’s great because it comes with a controller and it is meant specifically for Samsung mobile phone owners.

The very special thing about Samsung Gear VR is that it has its own software and that it is connected to the Oculus store. What this means is that it has its own virtual reality games and virtual reality apps, both of which are of very good quality.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find anything on Apple’s App store so far that would be as good as the games and apps they have on the Oculus store, but there is always hope for the future. The technology is growing very rapidly.

Oculus Rift

Oculus Rift is probably the most popular headset out there. It is more expensive than the previous two headsets, but it also is more advanced.

Oculus Rift does not need a mobile phone. Instead, it has its own software and hardware, designed specifically for the full-blown virtual reality experience. So if you have some extra money and want to see what virtual reality is really capable of today, then Oculus Rift would be the right choice for you.

In conclusion, I want to say that although it may seem like virtual reality at this point has a lot of limitations, I see a powerful future for it. VR is evolving very fast, and it is only a matter of time before we begin using it on a daily basis, at home, school and at work.

Either way, products such as the DESTEK V4 VR headset are a great way to experience virtual reality. DESTEK V4 VR headset is affordable and is of decent quality, which makes it, in my opinion, a perfect product to start with.
