Knowing how to promote a blog is not that difficult, but based on what I see online, it is one of the most popular questions asked throughout the blogging forums.

Therefore, I have decided to share my top 10 most effective strategies on how I personally promote my blog. Hopefully, it will be something new and useful for you. Enjoy!

How to promote your blog

1. Share your content on social networks

If you own a blog, you absolutely must create social network accounts for your blog business, even if you don’t typically use those networks. Why? Because it is one of the best ways to promote your blog. If you don’t yet have any organic traffic coming through search engines, your number one source for traffic will be social networks.

A Facebook page, Twitter and Instagram accounts are the bare minimum that you should have. Each time you have published a new blog post, go to your social network accounts and share that post there.

Also, don’t just create the accounts and stop there. Be active, post as often as you can, attract a fanbase. If you don’t personally have the time to lead your social network accounts, get a virtual assistant to help you.

You don’t need to join 10 social networks because it will overwhelm you. Pick only as many different ones as you can keep working on. I wouldn’t go beyond three.

2. Make YouTube videos

This one is not for everyone since many people don’t want to be on camera, but it is one of the best ways to promote your blog.

Let’s face it, YouTube is extremely popular and most people these days love to consume information in video format. Therefore, it makes sense for you to make YouTube videos as well. I understand that you may not feel confident on camera at first, but I recommend that you at least give it a try. Most of the time this feeling goes away with practice.

So how to promote a blog through YouTube? Well, you leave links back to your site where possible, such as in the video description, the comment section and in the video cards that are located in the top right corner of the video.

Additionally, you can always say out loud that you have a blog at the beginning and end of each video. You can say that your blog posts are a lot more detailed on the given subject than the video.

I’ve had plenty of traffic coming to my blog from my YouTube channel.

3. Quora

Quora is a great place to promote your blog.

In a nutshell, Quora is like a forum where people ask and answer questions. I, for example, always after writing a blog post, go to Quora to answer people’s questions that are related to my blog post’s topic. At the end of each answer, I leave a link back to my blog post.

To find related questions, you can either use the search functionality inside Quora or you can type it directly into Google’s search bar. If you are doing it through Google, use this format: site:quora.com “[keyword]”.

So for example, if I were to search for how to start a blog question, I would type it in the following way: site:quora.com “how to start a blog”.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you are answering many similar questions, don’t copy-paste your answer. First of all, that looks spammy, and second of all, Quora moderation will most likely “collapse” your answer.

4. Reddit

Reddit, also known as the front page of the internet, is the most popular forum on the internet. So it only makes sense to promote your blog there. Quora, by the way, at the moment comes as the #3 forum on the internet.

Reddit is made up of subreddits. Each subreddit has its own theme, such as blogging, entrepreneurship, meditation, etc. To promote your blog, you can do the same thing as you do in Quora – answer people’s questions in that subreddit and leave a link back to your blog at the end of your answer.

Alternatively, you can create a post that is made up of only a link back to your blog post. Not all subreddits allow you to do this, but many nevertheless do (see the image below).

Again, don’t be spammy, and try to add value first before promoting, or else you may get banned from that subreddit.

5. Guest posts

When it comes to how to promote a blog, guest posting is a very common strategy. So what benefits does it have?

Guest posting has two main benefits.

The first benefit includes link juice. Link juice is what you get when someone leaves a link pointing back to your blog.

So for example, you write a post for another blog. At the end of the post, in the author’s biography section, a link is placed that points to your blog. Google and other search engines will pick this up and give your blog an extra bonus point, making your blog just a bit more authoritative on the world wide web.

A rule of thumb is that the more links you get pointing at your blog from quality websites, the more link juice you have. A lot of link juice means that your blog will rank higher in search engine results compared to those websites that have little or no link juice.

The second benefit of guest posting is more straightforward. Someone browsing another blog sees your guest blog post, likes what you have written, decides that he/she wants to see more of your content, clicks on the link left in the biography section and lands on your blog, thereby increasing your traffic.

6. SEO

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is essential to growing your blog’s traffic. Here, you don’t promote directly. Instead, you make sure that you apply all of the best practices concerning SEO to your blog.

SEO determines to what extent your website will be visible to the rest of the world. It is the only language that search engines, such as Google, understand. So if you have absolutely zero SEO applied to your website, no matter how good your content is, no one will ever find it. If it’s not on Google, it’s basically nowhere. It’s the sad truth. I often say that Google is like the father of the internet.

So what does SEO include? The correct use of keywords, H2 tags, image alt attributes, internal linking, external linking, text length, meta description, site maps, etc.

SEO is not complicated as some people think, but it does take some time to master it. To be honest, if you are using WordPress, which I highly recommend, then all you have to do, apart from keyword research, is get the Yoast SEO plugin.

Yoast SEO automatically watches your content for best SEO practices as you write. The plugin will guide you and let you know what you need to do to make sure that your blog post ranks well in the search engines. The plugin is free.

P.S. I have written a whole article on SEO. If you are unfamiliar with the subject, I highly recommend that you read through it. You can find it here.

7. Ask others to promote it

Something I sometimes do is ask other bloggers to share my content. I do this in two ways.

I may find another blog with a related niche that has approximately a similar popularity score. I then ask that blog owner to share my blog post across their social networks. In return, I do the same.

The other way how you can get someone to promote your blog post is by talking about that person’s blog/product in your blog post. So you write a blog post, you mention another blog and preferably link to it, and then you contact that person and politely ask them if they can share your blog post across their social networks since you’ve mentioned them in your blog post. Every once in a while you get a positive response.

8. Find broken links in other blogs

This strategy on how to promote a blog is something I tried not so long ago and was amazed when it worked.

First, you download an addon to your Chrome browser called “Broken Link Checker” (or any other addon that has similar features). As you can probably figure out from the name, the addon scans any website page and picks up the links on it that are broken.

To apply this strategy, find other blog posts online that have similar information to your blog post. Then scan those pages for broken links. If you find a broken link, you can email that blog owner saying that one or more of their links are dead.

You can mention which link exactly it is and ask if they are willing to replace it with a link that points instead back to your blog post, assuming that your blog post is somehow relevant. So for example, if you have a blog post about Amazon keywords, search for other blog posts online that discuss Amazon keywords.

9. Email marketing

Email marketing is something that all bloggers must do. No, it does not necessarily mean that you sell stuff to your email list. Instead, each time you publish a new blog post, you can notify your email list that it is published and that they should check it out.

I always say that the earlier you start collecting emails, the better. The reason for this is that every person that visits your blog that is not on your email list will never return. An email list subscriber, on the other hand, will be a returning visitor, which is great for traffic growth.

10. Facebook groups

Finally, last but not least on the list of how to promote your blog comes Facebook groups.

On the one hand, it makes sense to promote your content in Facebook groups related to the niche that you are in. On the other hand, most group admins will not allow you to do this because they want their group to stay clean without spam and promotions. That’s totally understandable.

Yet, because Facebook is such a rich resource with over 2.7 billion users, I encourage you to take advantage of the platform in another way as well. I recommend that you create your own Facebook group in the niche that you are in. There you will be able to share your content with others as much as you want.

Unlike Facebook pages, where I rarely get a “like” or a comment, groups are more interactive and social. For example in my Facebook group related to everything self-development (come and join us!), we have discussions on a daily basis, many of which are not initiated by me. There, people get help and inspiration from each other, which is also fulfilling for me. Plus, I get to promote my blog for free.

However, the downside of a group is that it is a lot of work. Not only you need to attract people first to join the group, but you must also remain active in it in order to keep it alive. And the more members join, the more moderating you will need to do (use a virtual assistant for moderation if you can). I constantly have to remove spam and block members out of the group because they have joined just to promote their blogs and products without offering any value to the group whatsoever. So keep this in mind.
