In my last post, I talked about how to start a blog and make money from it. There I shared the story of how I got into blogging, and what can be done in order to make your blog a sustainable source of passive income. And while that post is quite informative already on its own, I believe that one of the discussed topics in it deserves more attention. That topic is “how to choose a profitable niche for your blog”.

What is a niche?

First of all, what is a niche? A niche, in other words, is a market. Your niche is going to be the market that your blog is going to focus on.

Fishing, online marketing, football, health supplements, veganism, vegetarianism, blogging and self-development – are all different examples of niches.

A niche can be very broad, such as “self-development”, or very narrow, such as “health supplements for pregnant women”. The pros and cons of broad vs. narrow niches will be discussed later on.

Choosing a niche is the most important part

When it comes to having a successful business, making market research prior to starting that business is absolutely essential. But what does that exactly mean? Well, you would be surprised knowing how many businesses fail just because they haven’t done enough research beforehand.

Sometimes, there is too much competition in a certain market. In practice, this would mean that in order to get ahead of your competitors, you would need to either create a better product than what everyone else is offering, or sell your product at a cheaper price than others. Of course, you will also need to spend a lot of time and money on advertising.

On the other hand, there can be too little competition. It just may so turn out that nobody cares about your “incredibly amazing golden USB memory sticks”. As a result, you have no business – game over. Hopefully, you haven’t spent all of your savings on buying gold.

And by the way, as bizarre as the example above with the golden USB memory sticks may sound, it’s actually a real example from real life. I knew someone that attempted this. Needless to say, it failed very quickly.

Coming back to how to choose a profitable niche for your blog, it’s no different than choosing a market for your product or service. If the niche is chosen incorrectly, you will have a hard time growing your blog.

The niche that you choose to write about is going to be the foundation that the rest of your blog stands on. Simply put, if the foundation is not there, there is nothing that you can do to make your walls hold. Thus, make sure you spend enough time researching the profitability of different niches. That is the only way to pick a niche and to not regret it later.

Passion vs. income-driven niche

When you think about how to choose a profitable niche for your blog, you must keep a few things in mind.

For example, are you going to have a passion-driven or an income-driven blog niche?

Passion-driven

Choosing a blog based on your passion is the easier option. Here, you simply write about something you genuinely care about. There really isn’t much else to it. You do what you are best at.

However, although it’s easy to write something you care about, a passion-driven blog also has its own set of possible problems.

First of all, are you sure that it really is your passion?
How do you know that it will be your passion tomorrow? For example, what happens if you are a vegan today, which is what your blog is about, but then you start eating meat tomorrow? Will you continue writing about the vegan lifestyle?

Secondly, how broad or narrow is your passion?
If it’s broad, how hard will it be for you to get noticed amongst the million other blogs on the internet in that niche? And if it’s really narrow, will there be enough people to care about your content? Again, there is no way to know this other than by doing research.

Finally, if you do want to monetize your blog at some point, do you know how you will achieve that?
Are there products to advertise or sell in your niche? Can you become a consultant or coach in the niche that you write about?

You also need to keep in mind that if your niche is too broad, you will need to work much harder to get noticed. And if your niche is too narrow, you may never have enough traffic to even make money by displaying ads. This is something you need to think about before you start your blog.

Income-driven

Having an income-driven blog niche is the other option when deciding how to choose a profitable niche for your blog.

At first glance, it may feel like having an income-driven blog niche is a no-no, and I would agree on this, to an extent. However, my job is not to tell you what you should or shouldn’t do, but rather to give you all of the information you need to know when deciding how to choose a profitable niche for your blog.

I have numeral times heard very successful people say that choosing a niche solely based on how much you can profit from it is the right way to go.

Their argument is that if you want your blog to be profitable and make a living for you, then you shouldn’t care what you write about. They say that despite it being a blog, it still is a business, and the ultimate goal of a business is to make money. Therefore, your blog must be your money-making machine. Otherwise, it’s just a hobby.

You may also be wondering that how can one keep writing about some subject they don’t care about on a weekly or even daily basis? Well, the idea is that you can hire ghostwriters that would write the content for you. Again, I personally don’t like this idea, but it’s important to know that these options exist in case that is what you want to do.

While I think creating a blog just to make money isn’t really the best business model, since there are much faster ways to make money online, I do understand why some people take this route. Some of the most successful blogs out there can make a seven-figure income, which, let’s be honest, is a hell of a lot of money for a blog to make. Very attractive, in my opinion.

Hopefully, you now have a better understanding of how to choose a profitable niche for your blog and why it’s so important to understand the pros and cons of each niche before you make that decision.

In case you are wondering, Growth Evolution Development ground is a purely passion-driven blog. Long before I even started this blog, I knew that if I ever do write about something, it will be related to how I was able to change my life for the better. Self-development was that topic that I wanted to share with others, and in the end, that is what I went with.

On the downside, self-development is a very broad niche with a lot of strong existing competition on the internet. It’s hard to get noticed, it truly is. But despite that, I know that there is not a single other topic that I would be capable of writing about on a weekly basis without feeling exhausted. It’s a choice that I made. It’s the only choice that I could have made. So if you feel the same way, then don’t wait. Start your own blog now.
